New research suggests that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such treatments must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
