Top Selection

The Substance

The filmmaker's unflinching critique tackles the oppressive nature of female beauty as well as the dreaded aspects of growing older. The veteran actress presents a masterful portrayal in the role of Elisabeth, a mature film star reduced to presenting a fitness program on the small screen. Forced aside by her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out a secretive and horrifying treatment known as the Substance. This generates a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, culminating in a steadily more vampiric relationship between them. This Friday, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This suspenseful thriller features the talented actress playing Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for a hiatus from covering global conflict to embark on a high-end voyage with a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her husband, and other extremely wealthy guests. However when an unknown lady disappears from the ship overnight and all passengers claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Available now, the Netflix platform

This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh tests his directorial skills through this innovative supernatural story shot entirely through the eyes of the spirit. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their fresh home, the filming device – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. Chloe seems conscious of the poltergeist, and the entity appears defensive toward her. But why? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, including a revelation you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, the Sky channel

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Cage wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom through this meta comedy caper. He plays a narcissistic celebrity called Nicolas Cage who accepts a $1m payday to attend a celebration on the Spanish island for the wealthy Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by government spies to gather intel on the alleged criminal, the actor's unique performing skills comes in handy. October 11th, prime time, on Channel 4

The Black Phone

Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a continuation. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has rendered the children anxious. After Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a cellar, he dreads a fatal end. But the old telephone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with eerie communicators providing assistance, as the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, on Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for Mammon in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation of the disgraced TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who states initially, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals commence profiting from the people's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of poor styling, overdone appearance and insincerity, however Jessica Chastain manages to present Tammy Faye with compassion. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, Film4

The Spy Mystery

The current week's second offering from the filmmaker presents a spy mystery as sharp similar to the collars worn by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer.
