No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in national works. They were built at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
